Tho Ashburton County Raoiug Club's Spring Meeting was commenced to-day in cold and gloomy weather. Light showers of rain fell in the early afternoon, but tho going was not materially affected. Though iho attendance waa considerably lees than usual the totalieator figures were not much reduced, the amount passed through the machine totalling £9050, as against £9757 on the corresponding day last year. In the annual report of the' Wellington Racing Club, members are congratulated upon the success of tho year ended July 31, 1914. Notwithstanding aii increase in the stakes of £5164 os.i tho surplus for the year amounts to £9342 15s. 10d., from which it has been decided to write off as follows:—Freehold property and buildings, £9000; furniture, £176 Is. 3d.; luncheon and toarcom plant, £107 19s. 9d.; horses, £31 12s.—m all, £9315 13s. This leaves a sum of £27 2s. 10d. to be carried to the accumulated fund. Those who agreed to guarantee tho club's mortgage- to finance the construction of tho I'renthain racecourse havo now been released, the finances of tho clnb having been arranged without' this β-ssistanoo. • ■ ■ . ■ ■•• . ■ Substantial increases in the taccommodation at both totalisater houses have been provided during the year, also a large refreshment room and cloak room have been opened. Tho works in progress include new six,; five, and tour Furlong racing tracks, which it is hoped will be ready for next summer meeting; It is with deep regret that the etewivards record the death during tho year of Messrs. Oiton Stevens and J. H. N. i\. Bums and Mrs. Rhodes.
The following office-bearers retire in accordance with tho rules, all being eligible for re-election: President, Mr. J. B. Harcourt; vice-president, Mr. W. IT. S. Moorhouse;'stewards, Messrs. J. W.-, Abbot, D. J.Nathan, and O. S. Watkine. Tho'revenue account of the club for tho years shows substantial increases all round for tho past year. From the Lotalisator the receipts wero £28,720, as against £23,611 for 1912-13, and gate money £4679, as against £3581. Hie c.take-s were, however, increased from £16,930 for 1912-13 to £22,094 last year, and the Government ,tax was increased by £1400 and other expenditure bad also more or less increased. The bank balance at tho closo of tho year stood at £8564, and the accumulated fund £14,517. '
