Mr. Cherry, who was commissioned by the Commonwealth Government to investigate the operations of the Beef Trust in Aniericii, reports that the results, of his observations in England and America is that certain large packing firms, particularly Armour, Swift, and Morris, the greatest factors in the American meat trade, mutually work together to give uniform prices for certain qualities of live stock. The pro-' ducer generally obtains fair prices. The consumer is exploited to a certain extent. ~ A progressive competitor of the Beef Trust is apt to bo ousted from business, unless he concedes a share to tho members of the Trust. There is no .law in the United States to prevent under-selling; Hβ has .arrived at the conclusion that Australia has much to fear by incursions of meat firms as units of tho American Beef Trust. In the interest of the community he maintains that the Commonwealth requires .the healthy competition Of inany good works, with capitals of at least £50,000 and modern plant commensurate with the output.-
