THE PRICE OF BREAD
'A RISE IMMINENT. Thep rice of flour delivered at bal?« ories in Welliugton is at the present time £13 per ton, a rise of £2 per ton sinco the outbreak of war on August 4. When the price of flour stood at £llper ton the master bakers of the city held a meeting to con»idor the question or increasing tho price of bread Iγ a halt' penny per loaf, realising that they'TOrtf making nothing by soiling, the 21b. loaf at 31-d. .Two-meetings have'beer held since, at which it was decided nofi to raise the price of the loaf, in the hopo that flour would recede in price. As there is no immediate prospect of s decrease, another meeting of the niastet bakers is to be held shortly to further consider the position. Stocks of flour bought at pre-wat prices are now practically .exhausted, and purchases have to be made at the ruling high rates, which makes rt almost imperative for them to raise the price of bread. It-should be pointed out that the master bakers of_ Auckland have been charging 4d. tor thfl 21b. loaf for over a year past. Ihe price at Petouo and tho.Hutt is 4d., and the same prico is being charged at Christchurch (with the-'flour at theii doors). Tho Wellington bakers get practically the whole of their supplies from the south, and freight, cartage, and wharfage amounts to about £\W ton, which indicates pretty clearly thai) the Wellington bakers have adhered tc the lower price, when others, more ableto afford to do so, have raised theirs.
