■ Mr. William Hay, of Hilly Park, Romaliapa, died on Monday. , Mr. Hay, (says tho Clutha "Frw Press") had attained the age of 75, and was for years looked upon as the pioneer settler of the South Glutha. Ho was i born in, Banffshire, Scot-laud, and \ his fathei (the late Mr. Geo. Hay) emigrated to New Zealand in 1840 in tho snip Ajax. William was then a hoy of 1U years,' Tho family were taken "by boat to Willsher Bay, Port; Molyneaux; whero they subsequently took up land. Father and sons went to the Gabriel rush, lvliere they "struck it rich," getting £500 apiece in six months. Deceased .held a uniqua record as a county coun* cillor, having held office as member fof South Molyneaux riding in the Clutha. County Council for 32 yeaistcontinuous* ly, boing threo times chairman, and on, his retirement a few meetings ago the council passed most highly apprecia* tivo motions in connection therewith. He held office at different times on. other local bodies, including the Clutha River Board, and was'a J .P.
