The Rev. John Mackenzie, of St. Andrew's, Cliristchurch, has accepted the call to Toorak, Melbourne. He is the first coloniil to be called to one of the most important Presbyterian' churches in Australia.—Press Association.' ■ Noto.—The latter statement, we are informed, is hardly correct. The Bev. Jolrn Ferguson, of First Church, Invercargill, was called to St.' Stephen's, Sydney, some years ago. Mr. H. Hague Smith has been appointed secretary of the Wanganui Chamber, of Commerce, to succeed Mr. J. L. Stevenson, who has retired after 18 years' service. News has been received from Auckland of the death on Monday. last of Mr. Brisbane Doyle ("Bris"), the well known theatrical and amusement entrepreneur. Ho toured New Zealand some years ago with Miss Florence. Baines, and later with her sister, Miss Mario Haines. Ho then took charge of Wonderland at the Auckland Exhibition.-He Ins suffered for many years from a ht-arfc affection, and had. been, some weeks in a private hospital prior ■to his death. Mr. J. V{. Henderson, of Kajori, whose illness at Dunedin was notified yesterday, is laid up with an attack' of malaria, originally contracted during a recent visit to the Melanesian Islands, A Press Association telegram from'' Palmerston states that Mr. James Thorn has been selected by the local Social Democratic party to contest the Palmerston North seat.
