WAR TAX PROPOSED
LAND, INCOME, & LUXURIES. ' (By Telceraph—Press Association.) • Inveroargill, September 7, At a meeting 'of the Council of the Southland League a motion by Mr. John M'Queen, a.- prominent member of tho Farmers' Union, was carried urgr ing the Government to levy a war tax on land and income, and by raising the duty through tho Customs on luxuries. Mr.,M'(}ueon mentioned that it was not desirable that public works should be started, and that already that was happening with loans to settlers. ' :: GUNNERS-WANTED . As it has, been decided to send moro guns.with the Main* Expeditionary Force, a few.extra-Imen; are required. Intending recruitsi'"should apply dircot. to. the adjutant, Wellington. Field, Artillery; Brigade,' Awapuni camp, , Pal-' merston North.'. .The qualifications- necessary are: Must have.experience in gunnery, or be a good horseman ; or sig-i nailer.
