PAHIATUA NOTES
_At the first annual meoting of the Pahiatua Defence Rifle Club, the bal-aiicc-shoet showed a credit of £3 10s. Id. Officers and committee were elected as follow:—Patron, Major S. Bolton; president, Captain C. E. Clifton; vicepresidents, Messrs. J. D. C. Crowe, F. Bolton, A. J. Cameron, W. Wakeman, andE. Sullivan; treasurer, Mr. A. A. Vaughan; secretary, Mr. R. V. King; handicappers, Major J. O. Lilly and Mr. A. J. Cameron; auditors, Lieut. L. T. Herbert, and Mr. G. L. ,H. Drew; general and match committee, Messrs. J. G. Swainson, J. K. Cnrpeuter, H. M. B. Marshall,. J. Gibbons, and Fred. Sedcolo. Messrs. King and Swainson donated 10s. .each towards the purchase of. now targets. Captain Clifton donated tho amount of an account duo to him, £1 6s. 3d. The opening day was fixed for September 16. Before the meeting, Captain Bracldell, of the District Headquarters Staff, explained tho proposal of the Defenco Department relative to. forming riflo clubs into infantry companies or platoons. At the conclusion of the address, Major Lilley swore in sevoral now members. A parado was subsequently held. Captain Braddell being in charge. The members agreed to drill oii two nights a week for a period. Two deaths occurred in a Pahiatua this week. Mr. 11. Hinds, a well-known sottler of tho Hincmoa district, nged 45 years, was brought into tho Pahiatua Hospital to undergo an operation, but expired before it' Could be performed. Tho other death was that of Mrs. Ashbolt, wife of Mr. W. G Aelibolt, of Pahiatua. The deceased had been au invalid for several years past.
