CHARGES FOR SUNDAY CONCERTS
.RECRIMINATIONS. AT. THE CITY ■ COUNCIL. The question of allowing a charge to bo made tor Sunday evening entertainments was again raised at tuo meeting of the City Council last night, when a letter, was received from the Wellington Ministers' 'Association in appreciation of the strong attitude-the_ Mayor had taken: up in protesting against allowing charges. '.'■'■ : ■■ ' ; 'Councillor T. C. A. Hislop referred to a Mayoral statement in the Press to the effect that permission to chargo at a-concert in aid of the Patriotic .Fund had been granted by the council during his temporary absence. Councillor Hislop said th'at when His Worship left ■the room a division on the question was imminent;... The action of .the counoil came after careful deliberation, and ho objected to the. Mayor, stating that a mistake had been made.
Councillor R. Fletcher , also protested against, the statement made by the Mayor;.' Councillor'A. H. Hindmarsh commented on the religious bigotry, stirred up when .the council decided to .put the matter. | plainly and allow ia charge. Nothing was said when the council'allowed other, bodies* to almost refuse' admission unless'", something was put in the plate, shaken under the people's noses, at the door.. . What right had a religious body to say ithat certain members of the council; were anti-religious and antiChristian? It was an impertinence. • Councillor J. Godber said that the remarks of a clerical member that thero was a section of . the council which was aiiti-Christian and anti-religious were beneath contempt. • After a £ood deal of discussion the Mayor replied; He said , that when the matter,.was .under consideration at a recent meeting,' in' committee, he; spoke against the proposal. He left the room for a few': minutes,'. and .when he camo back chargo had been granted. He. had .not_ been given the opportunity to vote, or. express an opinion in open council. , Acrimonious : interjections interrupted the meeting on,different:occasions, and the' Mayor asked several councillors to conduct themselves' like gentlemen. He felt that he had done nothing more than was warranted in the circumstances.
