THE BASIN RESERVE
CRICKET ASSOCIATION AGREEMENT.. A draft agreement between the City Council and the 'Wellington Cricket Association was considered at the meeting of the City Council last night. It provided that the council shall provide a groundsman to 'tako charge of the Basin Reserve, at a salary of £156 per annum, with a free house. The playing area lias to bo maintained in a suitable condition for playing during tlio cricket season. A j»int ccimuittee of the twd> bodies will control nil natters relating to the management of the (Maying area _ and pavilion, and the Gficket Association will pay £175 per annum, in lieu of ground fees. The council undertakes to purchase from the Cricket Association all its plant and material, arid its horse, ai, a price to he fixed by agreement. The nnoket season commences on September 15 each year, and ends on April 15 cf the following year. The association retains the right to grant all wickets ai tiio Basm Reserve, and receive all lees rayable for the use' of them. On all days when charges are 'made for admission to cricket matches oil the .basin Reserve, the corporation will collect the gate receipts, and after deducting 10 per cent, of the same and gate men's wages, will pay over the balance to the association. So long as tue p-esont pavilion stands the association will be entitled to the takings therefrom. . If during the currency of the agreement a new pavilion is erected, the corpora/ tion will liavo ibo i ;o modify tie provisions in regard to pavilion takingß. Tho proposed agreement is for a term of three years. Councillor J. Fuller thought the agreement was the., "cheekiest. agreement" ever submitted., He favoured supporting cricket but the terms of the agreement were very wide. He understood that legal proceedings were threatened in co.inec'ibn with the matter. Councillor l'-'tzgofald said that'tirce the threatened injunction against handing over the control of the Eoservo, the agreement had been modified. . Legal opinions had been obtained against tiie. agreement, and those opinions should not be passed over lightly. The whole matter should be referred' back for further consideration. ' Councilor M. I'. Luckio dfprecnted going over the matter again. The matter, had been considered beforo,' and the clauses of the agreement arrived at after' ■full discussion. If it was good in law the Seal' of the council mado it enforceable, but if it was not sound in law the seal, would not stand. The agreement was referred back for further consideration, and .the applications for the ]>osition of .groundsman were also left in .' lie hands of the committee to report.
