SOCKS FOR SOLDIERS

SUITABLE PATTERN FOR KNITTERS. ■

; The following is an excellent pattern of a sock which many women will find useful at the present time, when nearly every woman is busy "knitting socks. It has been found "a. boon and a blessing" when shooting on the inoors in Scotland, and for that reason- they should prove most acceptable to soldiers on the inarch: A feature of this pattern is the formula for casting off: It was pointed out at a recent meeting that the drawback to most knitted socks was the ridgs which was caused by the process of casting off. This is completely done away with if the knitter fallows the rules given in this pattern. Here aie ilie instructions'—Four or five skeins 4-ply beehive ivool. Needles, Nj>. 13. Cast on 80 stitches. Rib for five inches by knitting 3 plain" purl. Knit; the next round plain, and at end of last needle cast oii one. This is to bo ■ the seam stitch, and must be knitted plain one row and purl the next all down the leg. ExcEpt for this stitch knit plain for another five inches. Then for the heel take 1, half the stitch, i.e., 40i with the seam stitch in the centre .of theni and knit one row (still purling seam stitch) and purl .next row right along until. you have 40 rows done, forming a flap. Be sure and slip the Grst stiteh of each row. Next row knit to two stitchus beyond each . seam stiteh, knit two together, turn, slip first Btitch, purl to t\vo stitches beyond seam, stitch, turn, slip first stitch, and continue until all stiches aro used up. . Then pick up stitches down the side of the flap which rejoins those you have meanwhile loft untouched on the instep, and knit on plaiii, round and roundj decreasing one every two rows: oil the needles. Having reduced toe of sock sufficiently, divide remaining stitches equally on two lloedlee. Break off about 12 inches of wool and thread a wool needlo.
