SAFEGUARDING THE ART TREASURES OF PARIS.
(Rec. September 2, 5.50 p.m.) . . London, September 1. Paris Press reports state that many airmen are going to the front to revenge themselves on the Germans for dropping bombs in Paris. The authorities at the Louvto are protecting the ohief works of art from danger of aerial bombs. The "Venus of Milo" « enclosed in a steel room, and the "Winged Victory" is sheltered with heavy iron plates. Other masterpieces are guarded by sacks of earth, and the upper stories of the building have been converted into a hospital flying the Red Cross flag.—("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) • . FLOTILLA OF FRENCH AEROPLANES OVER PARIS. (Reo. September 2, 11.30 p.m.) Paris, September 2, morning. One of she bombs dropped by an aeroplane in the city on Sunday killed two women and wounded an old man. Another fell down a chimney, wrecking a flat. A second aeroplane dropped bombs yesterday without injuring anyone. A flotilla of armoured aeroplanes, with mitrailleuses, has been organised ' to ehaee Germans flying over Paris. ..,- A WAR OF ATTRITION. .(Rec. September 2, 5.50 p.m.) /- ; ~ London, September 1. The Times" military correspondent says we are faced with' a war of attrition on a very gigantic scale, and we have to carry out this strategy to the bitter end. jiince every battle we fight and every step by which we qrow Germany further from home makes her difficulties the more appalling, and the success of our cause more assured.—("Times" and Sydney '.'Sun" Services.). DETAILS OF BRITISH CASUALTIES. ; i (Rec. September 3, 1.30 a.m.) London, September 2, morning. _ It is officially stated that the casualties in one cavalry brigade and three divisions, minus one brigade, are as follow: — Other Officers. Ranks. Killed • 36 127 Wounded '~ 57 629 Missing m> , 95 ' 4183 Totals ...... 188 4939 , Total casualties, 5127, A considerable proportion of the missing are wounded, who have been sent to hospitals out of touch of headquarters.' The names of the officers will be published on Wednesday. It is not stated in what fighting the above casualties occurred. According to the message, the total force engaged would amount to 1753 officers and 51,856 of other ranks,, or 53,609 of all ranks. The percentage of casualties thus works out at slightly over 10 per cent, in the case of the officers, and slightly over 8 per cent, in the case of other ranks, or a shade over 9£ per cent, for all ranks. \ HUGE GERMAN CASUALTY LISTS. . (Rec. September 2, 11.55 p.m.) ! . . .The Hague, September 2. The German casualty lists have been received, and occupy six full pages of the "Reichs Aiizeiger." The killed and missing greatly outnumber ' Hie wounded. The dead include General von Bulow, who was killed in the fighting at Haelen, in northern Belgium. ° General von Bulow was a brother of Prince Bulowj for many years Imperial Chancellor of Germany. He was inypector-general ■of the third inspectorate,; of the German Army, comprising the Seventh, Ninth, and Tenth Army Corps. OFFICIAL NARRATIVE OF EVENTS. ■ .. ~,_.„„ London, September 1. Mr._ Asquith, in the House of Commons, announced that the Government was taking steps to supply a narrative of events from the front, to satisfy the public desire to know the details of the war.—("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) .
