Mr. Widdowson, ; S:M„ gave judgment to-day in an .interesting case in which the Tramways Union sued a member for three shillings, representing two .fines of Is. each upon defendant for absenting himself without'apology in writing from annual meetings of the union on two Sundays, and a further fine of Is. for not being clear on the books *-at a half-yearly meeting.; The secretary stated that the meetings were called on Sundays as 60 per cent, of the members wore unable to attend' on week-days. Defendant objected on principle to such meetings, and held that he. was justified in absenting himself without apology. In concluding his judgment the Magistrate said: "Although a great deal may. be argued on ethical grounds, I am bound to hold that the meetings referred to were legally held. lam therefore of opinion that plantiffs are entitled tp judgment, but I do not think costs should be allowed." • -'~"
