NOTES AND COMMENTS
18l QtENCOB.I Fashion Plate, winner .of the Sydenham Hurdles at tflie C.J.C. Winter Meeting, is an acceptor .in the big handicap at Marton next week. If is an extraordinary fact that tho locally-own-ed mare was only entered for the ono hurdle race at Riccarton and won it. Hor owner let tho National Hurdles' go past, and just put her in the Jumpers' Flat on t'ho first day and the Sydenham Hurdles on the last day. In the Jumpers' Flat she ran very badly, and was the last to finish, but in tho jumping race she outstayed the others, and was the only horso galloping at the finish. In the August Hurdles at Flemington on August 15,. Darrawa failed to riße at tho second fence, and H. Cairns, his rider, was thrown heavily, and trampled on by another runner, but beyond a' shaking and a few bruises ho was unhurt. Tho Melbourne sportsman, Mr." E. E. D. Clark, has threo two-years-olds by the imported horso Welkin, and'he has named them One, Two and Three respectively. Mr.' J. M r Mahon, chief stipendiary steward in Now Zealand, has returned from Ina holiday, spent in the Commonwealth, and will be present at tho Marton meeting next week. When tho Auckland-owned Mcrrimax won tho Second Hurdlos at Rosehill this month ho was tho outsider of the field, though tho week previous he had started favourite. Evidently after his poor showing on tho first day his party wore quite unprepared for his victory. , Mr. .W. G. Stead's Bon Revo is now
a good favourite for the Epsom Handicap, to bo run on October 3. In Franco last year tho proportion of the totalisator tax devoted to charitablo institutions and to providing small townships with pure drinking water and sanitary improvements amounted to £240,000. Thero was only one defection from tho big handicap at Marton. This was tho Hawke's Bay-owned Rcdloh. Mr. D. It.. Da Costa, secretary of the Poverty Bay Turf Club, who has beenon a two months' trip to Sydney and Melbourne, returned to Wellington by the Manuka yesterday. Duruig Ids stay on the other side, Mr. De Costa saw a lot of racing, and was much im- I pressed with tho huge fields that start at times. In pony, circles in Sydney there is a movement to limit the size of the holds, and it is only a question of time before this will become necessary at tho horse meetings. The Gisborue sportsman will leave for homo by the Victoria, which sails this afternoon. ' There are still fourteen horses of the North Island brigade that went south for the National Meeting' stuck at Riccarton. They wore to come north by last night's boat, if the Defence; Department did not want the space' for remounts. Mr. J. Hennah's hurdle horse Julian is still runliiug out at Riccartou, and so far lis owner has been unable to ship him homo to Hastings, Latest advices stato that the Memwce gelding's injured leg is improving, and the swellvng has now gono from Jhe tendon. . Paoli (Mcrriwee—Nukumaratea) was a runner in the August Welter, one mile, at Flemington on August 15. The Spring Meeting of tho Wanganui Jickey Club will be neld on Thursday, and Saturday, September 26: the Otaki Club races on Monday, 28th, and Tuesday, 29th; and the Napier Park Racing Club holds its Spring Meeting on the following Saturday, October 3. It is a wonder that the Otaki Club did'not apply to the Dates and Permits Committee for September 16 and 17, for its meeting, for with the l present dates it looks very much as if • there will be. a clash between' it and tho Wanganui Club Horses will be unable to race at both meetings. From Gisborne comes word of tho death of that good performer, and equally good sire, Multifid, who was owned bv Mr. C. J. Parker. The progeny of Multifid have dono extremely well on the turf, and as late as the Winter Cup Meeting Chortle and Itaupaui gave him a .good advertisement., Tliere is a rumour .that R. J. Mason will shortly, be returning to New Zealand, and that he will b,ring back all the horses he took across to the other side 1 , with the excoption of Cherubini. The reason for his nearly return is said to be dissatisfaction, with the treatment his horses have received from the Australian handicappers. It is also stated that .Valhalla has not been showing very brilliant form, and would have been Shipped homo before now if space could have been secured. If the team returns during the coming week, there would seem to bo every probability of Bimeter (Maltster—Comely) being a runner in the Wanganui Guineas.
