MASTERTON NOTES.

Advice has been received that Mr. R A. Nicholls, a well-knpwn settler of Mastertoh, who is visiting fho tinont, was. in Brussels last month. It is presumed, however, that he was •among the tourists who returned hurriedly to England when tho wa,r broke out, ■ .A lad}' resident of Masterton was in Paris, during tho siege of 1870, and claims the distinction of being the first lady to h»ave the city when the siego was lifted. News reached Mastorton yesterday of the death in Auckland of.Mr, Richard M'Kenzie, who spoilt his boyhood in this distript, but had latterly been farming in the Auckland Province. Mr. G. It. Sykes, M.P., is endeavouring to arrange an excursion from Mastorton on the occasion of the departure of the Expeditionary .Force from Wellington. A number of farmers in this district are placing their land under wheat and other coreals instead of devoting it to turnips and rape, as in former years. A difficulty is peincr experienced in securing suitable farm labour, as the Expeditionary Force has made a, drain upon the district. . The Masterton Amateur Theatrical Stcioty is producing "The Country Girl" at Greytown and Martinborqugh. The Mauriceyille- butter factory commences operations for the season on Thursday.
