SHINGLES AND A. MIRROI . TWO SORTS OF REFLECTIONS Mr. D.G. A. Cooper, 5.M..; presided ovor yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. George Frederick Shingles pleaded guilty to shattering a mirror in a shop' in Taranaki Street, and was ordered to pay the cost of the. same, £8 10s.; with witnesses' expenses 4s:, in default seven days' 1 imprisonment. Inspector; Hendrey explained that the occupants bf the shop had heard the crash, and qii rushing .out had found accused, lying drunk tin the floor of the shop. .When asked why ho did it he r& plied lie did not. like the look of it.. Shingles was also charged with dnitir konnes's, for which offence hi was lined 10s., in dofault 48 hours' imprisonment. A'SHOP-LIFTER, Frederick. Bell, who was' detected hy a constablo going along ,the street with' seven singlets concealed inidor his coat, pleaded guilty to the theft of the same from v tho shop' of Woolf Schwartz. When accosted by the policeman in the street; accused admitted he had .stolen the singlets,'. and' moreover conducted the constable to the- shop from where the theft had been committed. As nothing was as yet known against ''accused Inspector Hendrey asked for a remand, which was granted, till Friday next. THEFT CHARGES. The case.against James MDoriiiell, charged with'the theft of a portmanteau and dress hamper; valued at £2, from Agnes Mercer was'concluded. Accused was fined £3- in default seven days' iin-
prisonment. for tho offence. An order was inade for the return, of the stolen property to tho owner, or tho payment of 135., and that that sum be rcfundod to tho second-hand dealer. 'William Hargroaves was charged with committing the theft of a horso collar valued at 155., tho property of George Parkin. Accused, who was represented hy Mr. T. S. Weston, pleaded not guilty to the- charge. After hearing the cvidenco of both parties to tho case, the Magistrate dismissed tho information and ordered the collar to be returned to tho owner. ' . THE WEEK-ENDERS. There was an •unusually'long list, of weok-end inebriates. Charles Lmdbolm, William Watson, James Davidson, j James O'Neill, Oliver Duriford, John M'Michael, and Thomas Lawler bach.fined 10s. for drunkenness, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Mary Sprowell and John Sullivan were each fined 205., with the option of three days' imprisonment. Eleven first offenders were, dealt with. s John Forsyth appeared -on remand charged with being found helplessly drunk. Accused had come, to, the police station asking to be secured ih his own interest. He was convicted arid ordered to pay. the costs of medical treatment, I7s. 6d., in default 48 hours' imprisonment. ' For being disorderly while drunk, Henry Whitburn was fined £2, in default seven days', imprisonment. Accused wa6 allowed ft week in whiob. to find the money. ■-. MAINTENANCE OASES. - Charles Gurate was charged with disobeying a- maintenance order the arrears of which amounted to £9155.: £2 'was paid off the arrears,and accused, was sentenced- to seven days' imprisonment; the warrant to be suspended if the. arrears aro. paid before September 7. ;'Similarly charged, Henry Davy (arrears £18 125.) was sentenced to 21' days' imprisonment at Gisborhe, the warrant to be suspended.oh the payment of 2s. 6d. a wwk off the arrears.
