The Canterbury men proved far too nimble for the slower forwards of tho home side, and after the first fewexciting moments, when the Yellows had charge, they governed the first spell, but. only managed to notch one try (by Hepa.rty,. converted by' Crawshaw). The Taranalri forwards had been playing without cohesion, and the backs found their mateh in line-kick-ing tactics. The second spell saw the defenders more aggressive, and they kept the southerners mostly on the defence, though periodically the latter swept almost the length of the field. Some surprisingly good rushes by Taranaki compelled Canterbury to forco, and tho heavy onslaughts bothered the Red rearguard. Stohr placed a fine goal from the field. Chas. Whittington scored a try in. tho corner after crashing through alongside the line near the closing: stages, tho preliminnry to which involved clever work by Brown, Colman, Roberts, and Cameron. ENGLISH LADIES'HOCKEY TOUR
WANGANUI OUTCLASSED. (By Telegraph-Press Assoeiation.) Wanganui, August 20. Tlio touring hockey team of English ladies met the local team this afternoon, whon Wanganui was outclassed at every point of the game, and beaten by nine goals to one. The visitors played a fast, open game, giving a splendid exposition of hockey. The local ladies lacked combination and skill. Goals were scored lor the visitors by Misses Eames (3), Giiskell (1), Elwell (1), B Tuke (1), and Leacroft (3); for Wanganui, by Miss Ivy Perrctt.
