NOTES AND COMMENTS

: '..'I JBt Glkncoe.i It is .a matter for congratulation that the .Wanganui Jockey Club has reconsidered its proposal to abandon tho Spring. Meeting, and ■ tlie 1914 Guineas will now be run as usual. Nominations have.oben put back a week, and do not close until August 31. In Australia last season Mr. E: J. Watt won £4493 in/stake- money. Jockeys A. Oliver and W. Bell wero riding at the Manawatu Hunt Club meeting on W'ednesday, but neither succeeded l in riding a winner. It is said that there is a likelihood of Chortle racing in Australia shortly. His stable companion Multiply will remain in Gisboriie, aud bo given a special preparation for the New. Zealand Cup. • : At tho Manawatu Hunt Club races on ■> Wednesday, both the ■ hack ■ races were won by, tho Foxton-qwned Captain Mackay. In tho maiden race, Papador, who has an engagement in the Hack Hurdles at Marton,' was runner-up, and in the second race Lady Nolan filled that position, with Melologue in .third' place. The aged gelding Consul has competed in the Manawatu Steeplechaso several times, but it was not until tliis year that ho succeeded in winning tho event in question. jEe had only a head to spare at the finish from Reckless. ; . : ..' The Gisborno sportsman, Mr. F. Hall, went to Auckland at the conclusion of: the races at Ohristchurch to- confer with his trainer, E. J. Rao, in reference to the proposed trip to Randwick with Bleriot and Merry Roe. Both Sinapis aud Sir iSolo have been weighted at Bst. 91b. in the New Zealand Cup, and not Sst. 71b. as was previously published. . Tho. Awapuni trainer, A.. Shearsby, has shifted his team to- Wanganui, and will probably remain there until after the Spring Meeting of that'club. < Chortle, .Multiply, Iliad's Hero,' Gipsy Belle, and George were brought up from the south.by the Mokoia.- 'The two last-named were railed to Porirua, and'the other went on to Napier and Gisborno by boat. ■ Glenorchy, who up. till recently was held on lease by the Feilding sportsman, who Taces as Mr. J. Day, has now been purchased outright by that gentleman. He will continue 'to be trained by J. Cameron. Of the 66 horses handicapped for the New Zealand Cup only a dozen have been asked to carry Bst. or over." In future .no jockey's retainer will be recognised in the Dominion unless ;t is in writing by tho parties concerned and registered with tho secretary of the Racing: Conference. Tho North Island-owned Listen was disposed of after tho conclusion of the racing at Riocarton on Saturday. Her new owner is 'M. Duggan, who used to train and race Dobonnaire. Listen possesses a fair turn of speed, and, if properly placed, should pay her way in the South Island. St. Petersburg, the half-brother to Danube, weut wrong after contesting ,the Selling Race at Riccarton, • and it is unlikely that he will be further porsevered w,itli. .
