SHIPPING COMPANY'S £1000 GIFT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Chrlstchurch, August 20. The directors of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., have decided on behalf of that company to contribute' £1000, as follows:—£500 to the Empire Defence Fund, £250 to the Poor of , Great Britain and Ireland 'Relief Fund, and £250 to the General New Zealand Fund for the Relief of Trooters comprising the contingent and their dependents. ... .■ ' Thames, August 20. In addition'to sending 100 men the Thames has contributed liberally to the War Fund. The Lady Liverpool Fund has reached close on £600, and the Empire Defence Fund totals nearly £1300. Creymouth, August 20. . A first instalment of £2000 was sent to the Prime Minister . to-day as" a Greymouth contribution \ to the War Fund. , . ' Woodville, August 20. ■ Woodville has already contributed £400 to the Patriotic Fund, besides ten horses, sheep, chaff, and other produce. Yesterday the ladies sent to Masterton a large quantity of underclothing, etc., for the troops. Over seventy men who have 'seen service as ex-Contingonters, volunteers, and rifle clubmen have enrolled, and wish to become a branch of tho National Defence Reserve, and are offering their services to the Defonco Minister in any oapacity. They are drilled weekly, and last night over sixty were on parade. . , ■ ■ Carterton, August 20. The Lady Liverpool Fund here has now reached £147 17s. 6d. In addition to money, a very. large quantity of clothing has been sent in. The ladies are working enthusiastically, and the 'fund increases daily. The Expeditionary Force Fund has reached £684 16s. 6d. • A quantity of fodder has also been given, besides horses. Pahiatua, August 20. The Pahiatua and Akitio districts between thorn have subscribed nearly £1000. Tho Pahiatua ladies hope to raiso £200 for the Countess of -Liverpool Fund. They decided to open a fu,nd for local distress immediately resulting from war. . ,• ■- ■ Hawera, August 20. The Hawera County Council to-day decided to contribute £250. If occasion demands 'another like amount will be given later on. ■ . • ■ ' Tlmaru, August 20. The farmers and workers at Geraldine are pulling together to carry out the extra food growing to be given to patriotic uses —wheat for England, and roots to relieve local distress. About twenty workers at a meeting on Wednesday agreed to give their labour on farms or\ otherwise. ■ . (Bγ Tolerant*.—Roecle] Oorresnonient.) Palmerston North, August 20. ■ The Palmerston Operatic Society, whose stage manager, Mr. Harry Palmer, is going to the war, has resolved not to abandon its forthcoming production, but possibly, will donate the profits to tho Patriotic Fund. The society rsented Mr. Harry Palmer and Mr. J. Gray, who also goes to the front, with suitable parting gifts.
