HARBOUR BOARD'S GIFT. ' Mr. B>. Fletcher, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, has given notico to movo at tho meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board on August 26, that the board contribute the' sum of £300 to the funds now being raised during the present crisis—£loo to tho Government to assist in the dispatch of tho Expeditionary Forco now being raised, and £200 to a Mayoral Fund to assist the dependents of those- volunteers who have gone on active service, and to alleviate suffering and distress generally consequent upon the war; also that those members of tho board's staff who ha\e volunteered for service be granted leave of absence on halfpay while on active war service, and during the pleasure of the board. Tho City Council has decided to donate six ambulanco stretchers (similar to those used by the Tramways Departr mout)—ono for each of tho troopships. Tho stretchers aro now being made in tho carpenter's shop at tho tramwiy car-sheds at Nmvtown. Tho staff of Bellamy's has notified tho Mayor of their intention to hold a ball in the .Victoria Hall on Monday next, in aid of the Patriotic Fund. All manner of things aro at present being freely and generously offered to the authorities to help to augment tho Patriotic Fund. One of the latest offers received by the Mayor is the offer bv a Brooklyn resident of a cattle dog. The accompanying letter reads:— "Hearing that there is a great demand for cuttle do£S lust now, I beg to sa^
wo have one eighteen months old which wo would bo pleased to donate to tho War Fund. He is a black and tan collio most evenly marked, and comes of prize animals both sides. Ho would bo an invaluable watchdog, being pugilistic towards strangers. I would send him down with this only do not wish to add to your work just now." . There was considerable discussion at the meeting of the pnslow Borough Council last night, when the circular letter was received' from the Wanganui County Council asking the council to contribute one-twontietli share of its revenue for tho purchase of food supplies for the Home Government. The Mayor said that although ho was as patriotic as any councillor at the table, lie did not agree with tho letter from Wanganui. Tho residents of tlie borough of Onslow had entered l heart and soul into the Patriotic Fund movement. In view of this it would bo a shame to ask the ratepayers to contribute such a large sum as was proposed. After further discussion it was decided to inform the writers of tlio Wanganui letter that the council was not considering, tho matter at present. Captain Hooper, R.N.R., of the Government traiuing ship Amokura, ■ in» formed a reporter yesterday that' the lads in training on the vessol had offered to give half the amount of their pocket-money per month to the Patriotic. Fund. Mr. J. Sharp, of Petone, has donated a horse to the Defence Department, end the animal will be sent to Palmerston to-day. ■
