VICTORIA COLLEGE COUNCIL

GOVERNMENT GRANT NEEDED. A meeting of tho .Victoria College Council was held last night. There were present: The Rev. W. A. Evans (in the chair), the Hons. A. L; 'Herdman, and J. G. W. Aitken, Dr. Prendergast Knight, Messrs. C. B. Morison, C. Wilson, A. R. Atkinson, R. M'Callum, and W. Ferguson.. A letter from the chairman of the Professorial Board advising economy in the oarrying on of the college work was considered by the. Finance Committee, and it was recommended that the library order for books should bo cancelled by cable. The recommendation was adopted. The Finance Committee recommended that a satisfactory report on the work of tho Jacob Joseph Scholarship holders, 1014, having'been received, the first inof their scholarships "be paid. —The recommendation was adopted. , The Hon. A. L. Hordman asked what 'had been done in the matter of "approaching the Minister-of Education for money needed for the extension of buildings and improvements to ground. The Rev. W. A. Evans said that the committee appointed to deal with the matter had decided to wait on tho Minbut he thought that it was felt that it would not be wise to do, so now. Mr. Hordman said that-he did not see why thoy should not do so now, even if they did not. get the money. Their college was worse off than any other college, with the exception of Auckland, and more dependent on Go-, vornment assistance. It would not do any harm to bring the matter under the notice of the Minister. On the suggestion of the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken it was decided that the Registrar. should notify the chairman of the council that the matter had been raised at the meeting, with a view to the committee waiting on tho Minister of Education. The council then adjourned to attend Dr. Hanus's lecture.
