A contributor has sent in the following directions for making Balaclava caps:—Material: 3oz. petticoat yarn, 1 pair No. 7, bone knitting pins. ; For making cast on 72 etitclies and knit in ribs of 3 btitches plain and 3 purl for 35 rows. ■ Next knit 57 stitches still in ribs, then turn and knit 42. You have now lo stitches left unknitted at each end of the pin which can be slipped on to two spare pins or coarse pieces of string as they will not be wanted for ti time Continue straight on in ribs for 36 rows, then proceed to shape-the hoadpiece thus: Knit in ribs 39 stitdhes leaving 3 .stitchos at tho end. .Turn and knit 33, leaving 6 at tho end. Turn and knit 33 leaving 6 at the end. Turn and knit .30 leaving 6 at the end, and knit 27 leaving 9 at tho end. Turn and knit 24 leaving 9 at the end. Turn and knit 21 leaving 12 at tho end. Turn and knit 18 leaving 12 at tho end. Turn and knit 15 leaving 15 at the end. Turn and knit 9 leaving 18 at the end.: Turn and knit 0 leaving 18 at the end. Nest row: Knit in ribs'to the end and pick up 18 stitches down the side of th© headpiece as in the heel of a stocking, turn and knit in ribs beginning with. 3 purl to the end and pick up 15 stitches »t tho opposite side of the headpiqee. Turn and knit as in previous row beginning with 3 purl, but proceed as in shaping the head, leaving 3 stitches at the end for two rows, then leaving 6 stitches at tho ends, and so on until 18 stitches are left at each' end of the pin, then turn and knit to tho end and pick _up tho 15 stitchesieft on the spare pin pr string. Turn again and knit to t!ho end, picking up the 15 stitches left on the other spare pin ox string. You have now 108 stitcilies. Knit 24 rows, cast off and sew the sides of tho knitting together. The join comes under tho chin. A- full meeting of the Wellington South Nursing Division was held in tho Newtown Library on Tuesday, August 18, and a good evening's work was put in. Keen disappointment was felt by some ■of the members that their services were not required for the Expeditionary Force, but they were urged by' the lady superintendent, Mrs. Preston, to remember they were ambulance nurses, and not hospital nurses, and that thero was no reason why, with tile training they had received, the.v could not become very efficient and do good servico, when occasion arose, it was, the amount of sewing. done by members and their friends for the Expeditionary Force was beyond calculation.
