> ■■ - - ■ At thie, Sailors' Friend Society In stitute last evening the'crews of the troopships wero farowelled. They wore accompanied by crows of' otheivships. Mr; Moore, Missiorier, who' was in the chair, announced that friends were arranging for a bonny time for the men on Friday, to bid them God-speed on their long voyage. Tho performers wero: Tho Misses Van Stavercn (2), Thano (2), and Kirk, and Messrs. Gilmour, Heme, Crawley, Hilling, H.M.S.N.Z., ,T. 6, Roy, Durham, H.M.5.N.Z.,, T.lO, Cavanagh, Levett, Healand, and Sign. Cheers were given for the hostesses. On Tuesday evening tho sailors in port met, under the auspices of the Bear-a-Hand Club ( to discuss'the future position of the sailors, in port should a time of stress arise for the men of tho sea. The following valuablo suggestions were' made as to what they might do if it was impossible for them to follow their vocation: (1) That in consequence of their knowledge of the sea, they could fish for the community if the Government supplied the gear; ('2) that from their knowledge of boats and the sea, they could offer themselves for harbour : defence \ and boat work 1 (3) they would offer their services for preparing the land for produce on the vacant sections in and near the city; (4) that they would undertake to make roads or work on any, co-opera-tive works, 1 . Needless to say, the whole of these suggestions were carried unanimously.
