A COURTSHIP INTERRUPTED
BY A RIFLE BULLET. (By Telegraph—Piesa Association.) Invercargill, August 19. A young man named l)avid Cody, a resident of Heddon Bush, was admitted to the hospital yesterday .suffering from a wound in one of ; lianas caused by .1 rifle ball. I& is Baid that pody was courting the daughter of a neighbouring farrnor, but that the affair was not viewed with favour by tho parents of the girl. The young people's interchange of messages was chiefly by letters left by Cody in a secret repository near the girl's home. The other night Cody made his -way to the repository, and when a few yards from tho spot he wished to reach he was challenged by someone hidden by tho darkness. He took no notice, and a moment afterwards he heard the click of what ho took to bo a rifle. He continued on bis way, and had gone some little distance when a report rang out, and he was struck by a bullet. It »s understood that the bullet struck tho main bone in his hand, and that it was only removed with considerable difficulty. Another young man, a brother of the girl with whom Cody was corresponding, has'beeiV.arreated.
