HIGHLAND RIFLE CLUB

ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. Members of the Highlanders' Rifle Club gathered in fairly laTge,number on the occasion of the annual smoke concert last night, Deputy-President S. R. Shannon being in the chair.' Among the visiters were: Colonel R. J: Collins, C.M.G.. 1.5.0., Lieutenant-Colonel C.' D. Mackintosh, Major H. Marshall, and the Mayor (Mr.. J. P. Luke).' President J Macdonald was unavoidably absent from the City on business. Colonel Collins: in a speech in reply to the toast of tho Dominion Rifle Association, mentioned that .'there weie at present some 205 rifle clubs in. New Zealand, with a-. membership of over 4000 men. He praised tho movement, which had resulted in the recent formation of the .Rifle Clubs' Reserve Corps, and declared that now when the dogs of war were let loose, tho authorities would recognise that a man who could shoot straight was no mean factor in the defence of the .Empire. During the evening tho prizes won throughout the' season were presented, by Lieutenant-Colonel Mackintosh. Tho prize list was ab follows" —Club .champion, Rifleman J.
