HEAVY DEMAND FOR COAL
Owing to the unusual demands being • ' made now for steam coal for immediate or almost immediate delivery for Empire defence purposes, it is, quite probable, that for a few weeks supplies of coal for household and industrial pur- : poses will be short. Every-coal yard in the City; however, has stocks of coal of sorts on hand, and supplies of firewood are ample, so that there need be no 1 dearth offuol that will serve for house*. : v \ hold purposes. After the. transports ■ have sailed, the supply will overtake the demand again in a very few .weeks. Because of the abnormal demand for coal - for these special purposes, "a.request has been, made to the Westport miiiera to work oh pay Saturday, which is next , Saturday, contrary to their, usual cus- , torn. It is stated that the miners, havo , refused to give up their holiday, but it , is still hoped that they may be. induced to reconsider their decision. .
