THE EMPIRE'S CALL.
COUNTRY'S SPLENDID RESPONSE. A further long list of contributions to the Defence Fund was read by tho Prime Minister (tho Eight Hon. W. F. Massey) in the House of Representatives last night. . When he had announced all the offers received, he 6aid that a total of £19,000 in cash had been offered since the rising of the House the day before. With bicycles and horses the offers would come to considerably over ,£20,000 in twen'tyfour hours. That v.as a record that would bo satisfactory to everybody concerned. Quite a number of local efforts had teen made, notification of which, had not reaoiied.him. Ho believed that fully J2100.000 would be received in cash, tie Delieved that that must be satisfactory to everybody who believed in the wel 7 tare of New Zealand, and Eho welfare of the Empire. "Sheapfarmer" writes to the editor suggesting that the farmers might contribute sheep for the relief of the English., poor, tho gifts to; be;distributed,, by the New Zealand .High Commissioner. - Perhaps, he adds, the dairy companies might like to devote a small proportion of their outputs to the same cause. As to the sheep, he says that the Government-would' probably' truck them to the nearest freezing works, and that .the, freezing, companies would probably handle them at cost price. . The donations could be taken by Farmers' TJnion representatives at the stock 6ales, and the considers that the scheme would provide a means' of contributing for farmers who have not at present much ready cash. : It was stated in The .Dominion' yesterday tihat: the Wairarapa district, would find £500. The people of .the district have, of course, already subscribed very much more. ■ The number really Teferred to the supply of 500 horses to the Government free of Charge. • - . . . _ A public meeting was held at Karori yesterday; for. the purpose of organising assistance to the Expeditionary Fund. Tho Borough .Council Chambers was crowded with ladies and . gentlemen, and much enthusiasm was displayed. A committee of twelve was set up, and collecting cards were distributed. It was decided to procure six sewing machines, wmch wffl be installed in tho Council Chambers. The ladies will meet on Friday for sewing, and continue meeting every day till the work is completed. At a meeting .held nt Kaiwarra by tho Mayoress of Onflow (Mrs. C. C. last evening, for tire purpose of making garments for the Expeditionary Force, the following ladies' committee was formed:—Miss Cameron (chairwoman), and Mesdames Newton and Lynneberg. A donation of £50 was received from Messrs j; Newton, and Co. for tho Patriotic Fund. . , - At. a meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute held yesterday it was decided that all subscriptions collected by ■ the school teachera throughout the Do- ' minion sjhould- bo handed in to the Institute, in order that a joint donation should bo handed into the Empire Defence Fund. A meeting of Civil Servants at Groymouth yesterday (Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, SM., presiding) resolved to contribute one day's pay to llie War Fund from those receiving up to £300 a year, and two days'"pay from those receiving over that amount. distriot, and intense enthusiasm is being shown. Wanganui, August 12. Enthusiasm ran Inch at a publio meeting in the Opera House to-night, held to consider steps to be taken to raise a war fund. The building was packed, and £IOGI was subscribed in tho building. (By Telegraph.—Special OorresDondentJ' Palmerston North, August 12. A deputation of thirteen Syrian residents visited the newspaper offices on -Tuesday evening to espross their sympathy with the British nation, and to donate thirteen sovereigns to the Patriotic Fund. They explained that this was an expression of gratitude for the pro-; tection afforded to their nation by Britain and Franco in 1860, whon massacres ■were proceeding in Palestine. This help, they declared, would nevor be forgotten by Syrians, who considered that Britain and 'Franco were the protectors of the weak against oppression. , Napier, August 12. The patriotic fund is rapidly mounting tup, well over j>looo having already been reoeivod. The "largest sum contributed to-day was .£SOO, the donor being Mr. J. N. Williams. The ladies' fund to provide comforts for Hie volunteers amounts to £103.
