Werner Tobin, an apparently young man; with a long'beard, was charged with carrying loaded firearms to the common annoyance of His Majesty's subjects; The accused, who is «, German, and resided on, the banks of the Mataura ■ Hirer, was in the habit of carrying a repeating rifle about with htm, with which he said ho was going to shoot • Britishers. Two constables who had been sent out' to the district, kept a, watoh over the defendant'? hut all last night, and this morning, when he came outside, they arrested him. On going into the hut they found a dcuble-barrelled breach-loading, guu; loaded, aiul a rifle. There was also a repeating rifle, which tho defendant carried with him in the daytime when he went to work in the bush. ' The Inspector of Police asked for a remand for seven days to enable the Police to secure evidence that the accused was not right in his head. ' ■ At this etafje the accused adopted an aggressive attitude, and said he ''would "Let any man know ha was right in the head." If anyone said he wasn't he would "get a fistful in the eye, followed by another from the other hand." Waving his arms about, he declared: "Yes, I will hit anyone on tho nose too who-says I am not right in the head." ■ He then gave the top of his head a'violent, slap, and said: "This head God Almighty has given.vto me. I am not a murderer j I'only carried a rifle for sport." In answer to a question from the Bench, the accused said that he was a German.
