Women at Work. . .. From ail early hour yesterday 'morning women wer'o working in the Town Hall, and great piles of. gamieus, "house wives," s and hold-alls bore eloquent testimony to 0 their labours. All day long the sewing- - machines were whirring away, and at " times there were queues formed by wait- • li)g-women, anxious to take work away 3 with them to their homes. Twenty or tivmity-four garments at a time they | would ask. for, so keen is tho desire to ' do all that' is possible to speed tho necessary labours. Those who are in doubt ' ns > to what would be the most useful thing to give need not hesitate to forward money, as that can always be spent in getting , comforts -which otherwise might not bo obtainable. All tho necessi- , ties are being provided, but there aro . things outside their limits which would be most welcome, and which could be obp tained with financial contributions. At tlfe farewell meeting which was held t at Victoria College, the women students 1 volunteered to work at clothing for the j hxpeditionary Force, and are now busily plying their fingers at their tasks. l The rush of work for tho departing , I' orce has spread even to the Mental Hos- , 'Pital at Porirua. One of tho patients i heard by some means or another that I the son of the official visitor to tho Hospital was a member of the departing cxi pedition, and.immediately set, to work to make a "housewife," .entirely to her own design. The result was a beautifully executed piece of work, complete to the last derail. Needless to say, tho gift was much appreciated, both by tfe official visitor and her son. A dance recital in aid of tho Countess of .Liverpool's Expeditionary Force Fund is being, given by Miss Estelle Beere'in the Town Hall on Friday, August 24, when lier talented pupils will appear in a series of entirely new dances and ballets. / Tho recital will bo given under the patronage and in the presence of Their Excellencies tho Governor and tho Countess of. Liverpool, , Sir Alexander and Lady Godley, tho Right Honourable- the Premier and Mrs. Massey, Viscount and Viscountess Kelburn,' the Mayor and Mayoress, Sir Joseph and Lady Ward. A meeting of ladies is to be held at Karon to-night to consider what steps . shall be taken ■to assist in tho equipment of the Expeditionary Force. . In connection with Lady Liverpool's appeal for the Expeditionary Force, the Mayoress _of Onslow met the ladies .of Ngaio last evening; wihen the objects of the scheme were discussed. Mrs. Thompson was elected chairwoman of tho committee that was set up. io.. canvass for subscriptions.. Mrs. Newbold announced that she would provide a room in. which work could be done by the ladies. ' 1 A meeting of ladies was held at the Lower Hutt Council Chambers last evening, in response to Her Excellency Lady Liverpool's request,'tho Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin, convenor) presiding over a large attendance. The prepared material for the committee's guarantee to tho {Defenco Department was brought, by three ladies, and most of tho evening was devoted to the allotting of the work of sewing to various members! Miss Callerider was elected secretary, and Mr. W. B. Nicholson treasurer of (ho general committee. The. Lower Hutt ladies' guarantee to tho Department consists of 100 caps. 100 holdalls, 100. "housewives,'' and 10 suits.of underwear. A. patriotic demonstration is to be.held at Lower Hutt .on Friday evening next, tho object being to raise funds to assist tho ladies' committee. In response to lady Liverpool's invitation a largely attended and enthusiastic meeting of.. ladie3 was held at Gore today,, and resolved .to purchase a horse as a gift , for the officer commanding the Southland section of the Expeditionary Contingent. It was also resolved _to manufacture articles for the use of New Zealand soldiers. Mrs. W. Kebbell (Alfredton) is visiting Wellington, Mrs. English, passed through Wellington yesterday 011 her return to Timaru from the north. . / • Mrs. W. P. Massey will open the first of the two Girls' Market Days, to be held at the Young Women's Christian' Association tliis afternoon and evening from three o'clock to- ten. Afternoon and even'ing teas' and refreshments will bo served, and the.ro will bo a sale of fancy and useful articles, including plain sewing,' the work of tho girls themselves. There will also be . produce and sweets stalls.
