GUILD OF SERVICE
NATIONAL WOMEN'S MOVEMENT A SPLENDID PROPOSAL. ,That tho women of New Zealand are rising splendidly to the occasion ii one of the outstanding' features in connection with tlio activities of the community in this little outpost of tlio Empire. A movement that is likely to develop into an organisation, of signal service to the local authorities was initiated in a letter received by the chairman of the Wellington Hospital and Cliaritablo • Aid Board -(tho Rev. W. A. Evans) yesterday. The letter, which- speaks for itself, reads as follows:— "To the Chairman, ' "Hospital aud Charitable Aid Board. "Sir,—As three ' citizens we desiro to ask your assistance in tho matter of organising the women and children of tho Dominion as a Guild of Sorvico to to help the families of tho members of tho Expeditionary Forces and others en,'ed in. military duties in or out of the Dominion. Wo aro anxious that it should bo a 'national movement, and so arranged as .to prevent overlapping. Being more or loss closely in touch with the Society for tho Protection of, Women and Children, the W.C.T.U:, and the Women's Teachers' Association, we feel confident that such a movement would have tho support of these bodies, although the urgency.-of < the matter has prevented our consulting them. "Wo are, yours sincerely, "PHOEBE MYERS ' ' "KATE 11. EVANS "A. E. DOWDESWELL," . In tho. reply forwarded to Miss Pkoebo ' Myers by the secretary of the Board (Mr. . J. Coyle)j_ it is stated that "a recommendation will be placed before the board for its favourable consideration at its meeting to.lie held on August 20: 'That your request for tho assistance of my board be granted in tho matter of organ£ing_ the women and children •in tlio Dominion.as a Guild of Service to help tho families of those engaged in military duties and relieve tuo "general distress consequent on the war/ A further recommendation will bo made that an intimation bo sent to tho other Hos- • pital and Charitable Aid Boards throughout tho Dominion that they should cooperato with organisations similar to •! ■' those you represent. It is considered further that tho movement should be regarded as a national one, and it is with this object tho board is desirous of obtaining the co-operation of all the Hospital Boards throughout New Zealand." x hough tho matter ha 9 been deferred for referoneo to tho Full Board on Ailgust 20, the schemo has been accepted as approved, and details aro now beinp arranged that will make it a Dominion institution with a definite object, and one that will see that in the work of helping those who may become distressed loss ot their breadwinners at tho war,, there will be no contusio* or unnecessary overlapping.
