CITY COUNCIL'S PROPOSALS,
If the proposal. that has been placid before the City Council in resppct to tho ' new rates is adopted, the bulk of the property-owners will find' that a sliifht,'■ reduction has teen effected. In consider-! in? the rates, there are onlv two of the individual demands to consider, viz., the /> general rate and the Hospital and Chfrit- ; able Aid rate. The former now stands at 2 t-10d. in the £, and the proposal how before the council 1g that it be reduced to. 2d., whilst a reduction in the Hospital and Charitable Aid ; Board's demand to-the -amount of over JGOO, has caused a proposed drop in that rate from 3d. in tho £ (on the general value) to : 2 2-3 d. The water rate is unaltered, and the rates to meet the interest accounts -" on loans is only altered fractionally -to assist in bookkeeping. ~'.-'■ * The rates as now compared with thosf proposed are as follow:—' i ■ . ■ ■ . ' (These rates are struck on the annual value.) • It is only the old city proper (that portion which was under the jurisdiction of the Wellington City Council before the Melrose Borough was absorbed in 1904-5), that has been completely revalued this year. The new value of that part of the city has been computed by the Valuation Department at made up as follows:—Unimproved, .£9,380,767; improvements, .£6,625,858. The total value of Greater Wellington prior to the last re-valuation'(of the old part of the city) was .£18,754,349; made up as follows-.—Unimproved, ,£10,106,365; improvements, £8,652,262.
