WOMEN AND THE WAR

APPEAL FROM THE COUNTESS OF' LIVERPOOL. The following appeal from Her Excellency the Coimtes9 of Liverpool lias been addressed to the women of New Zealand:— Government House, Wellington, ,' • August 6, 1911. . At this moment of our Empire's needs I desire to appeal to the women of New Zealand to assist mc in trying to provido any necessaries which/may bo required for_ those portions of the citizen army which are now mobilising for any service which, may be required of them. "My suggestion would bo to start a fund in every centre under a.small committee of ladies. In tho larger towns it might be possible that the Mayoress would be- able to see her way to get'such a committee together, and in tho smaller locali'tios I feel convinced it will be easy to find many who would willingly assist in such an undertaking.' "These committees should be.prepared .to receivo contributions, whether in money (however small the sums), or in kind; If tho latter, it appears to me that we could not do better than follow some of the suggestions made by theCommandant of the New Zealand Forces in to-day's papers'," in which he mentions" underclothing, flannel shirts, socks, holdalls .(containing knife, fork, and spoon), housewives (to contain needles, buttons, etc.), or contributions of materials to niake- these, such as flannel, knitting wool and ■ knitting needles, American cloth, binding thread and buttons. "After further consultation, I will endeavour to find out in what-manner a ■distribution would be most useful and practicable, and will, through the medium 'of tho .Press', convey the conclusion which may bo arrived at on the subject. ■ I have taken this early onDortunity of appealing to the women of Nev; Zealand on this matter, and to obtain tlie most beneficial results, it is essential that we should all'be guided by any suggestions which the Defence Department may think desirable." ■. •' "(Signed) ANNETTE LIVERPOOL." Work for the Nurses. At a meeting this week of the Wellington '••Nursing Division opportunity was taken of learning something more'of gunshot wounds in view of the probable necessity of dealing with 6Uch injuries, and a short address on tho subject was given by-Nurse Macandrew, followed by some practical bandaging.* ', The secretary read a' circular from tho headquarters- of tho St. John Ambulance Brigade, calling for volunteers for_ active service at Home or abroad. This met with a ready response. Every member is prepared to undertake the duty allotted to her,- arid a substantial number volunteered for active service abroad. At'the meeting of the Wellington South Nursing Division several names were given to tho lady superintendent; for service as ambulance nurses in the field.
