' ANNUAL CONGRESS. PRIME MINISTER WELCOMES DELEGATES; The.annual conference of the A. and P. Societies of New Zealand was opened in Wellington by the Prime Minister (the Hon. .W. F. Massey) yesterday. Mr. J. C.' N. Grigg (Canterbury; was elected to. the chair. • ' .-■••■ The Prime Minister expressed his pleasure at meeting such a large gathering of representatives of agricultural industries. After speaking'on subjectsrchieli are reported elsewhere, he went on. to say that, so far as Parliament was concerned, it had been able to give effect to some of the suggestions which' had emanated from previous conferences of the association. For one tiling, the Beard of Agriculture had been , established. A start had been made in South Canterbury with the rural-workers' homes' scheme, and lie intended to extend this as opportunity offered. The law had been altered .so as to allow local bodjes to assist the Government in' this- direction if they so desired.: Formerly the local bodies could not use' part of their funds for such a purpose; The Government had done a little more jn the way of exempting improvements. •He did not say that the Act was now perfect, but it was better than formerly. (Applause.) , I Mr; Massey was heartily thanked for his address. ■ ' The retiring chairman (Mr. E. Camphell)- briefly addressed the- conference. He .remarked ' on the fact that the recommendations of the association's ■ committee, ; that a ■ board of ■ agriculture should' be establishedl had Been given effect to, and that six of the eleven members.. were members of the as'social : TheMariawatu Association .moved:.
