WOMEN AND BOYS IN WOOLLEN MILLS
■ ; <; — : AGITATION FOR SHORTER HOURS. Recently Mr. E. Kennedy, secretary of the- N.Z.' -Federated Woollen Mills Employees' Association, circularised a letter urging upon members of Parliament to support, a proposed amendment of the Factories Act, in .the'direction of reducing the hours for women and hoys employed in woollen mills from 48 hours per week to 45. Encouraging replies have been received from a number of members as the result of this circular.- Messrs. J.i Rtobertson, J. Payne; and J. M'Combs, three of,the Labour members, have promised their support of the measure. Messrs. A. E. i Glover and J. Bradney havo also promised to support tho amendment, "while favourable replies have been received from Messrs; H. M. Campbell, George Witty, T. K. Sidey, and others. , The Hou. A. L. : Herdman has replied j .fofthe effect that the matter is-oho for! consideration of the Minister of itaibour, to -whom' he was referring the circular. The Hon. R. H. Rhodes also expressed his willingness to confer on the matter with the ; Minister of Labour. The Hous. W. H. Herries, F. M. B'. Fisher, and. W. F. Lang, and Mossrs\ T. H. Davoy, W. Npsn-orthy, and A; S. Malcolm have promised careful consideration of the question. Numerous verbal promises of sup port have also been received by Mr. Kennedy.. ■.. -
