UNEMPLOYED IN THE CITY

- THE POSITION EASIER. "There are .stil' unemployed about,',' said the Mayor (Mr.-J. P. Luke);yesterday morning, ; 'but there are-'not nearly so many as.there were a couple of months ago. I think the .action of the Government in sending a lot of men to public works in the country has thinned them dowii a bit. It is a pity in a way that wo have had a lot of our work Icept back—there's plenty of work provided for on the City : Engineer's estimates which we would have gone on with but for the fact that we have not been able to get the money in oil account of the delay that has taken place in getting out the now valuation of the' City. Here, for instance, is Molesworth Street, to be reformed with a concrete foundation and an asphalt finish, £2500. That" has been passed-by the council, and would be now under way only for the monoy trouble. There-is some woodblocking, and a. whole lot of 6treet improvements that have to bo done this year. -We have made a start with some of them—work is,going on in connection with the new , road -that follows the team lino to. Brooklyn, but mostly the work that is underway is only that at> tendant: upon the upkeep of the ordin-ary-City-services.
