HILLECREST DISASTER

At the inquest on the Hillcrest mining disaster, tho jury, found that it was due to an explosion of gas and dust, and thai; tho company liad infringed 1 the Mines Act. It was reported from Vancouver on Juno 19 that an explosion of gas had occurred in the Fernie Coal Mine, Hillecrest, Alberta. The mine blazed fiercely, which prevented any rescue work being undertaken. The total death roll numbered 197, and the whole male population of the town of HiUecrest was said to havo been wiped out. Firedamp exploded at the 1200 ft. level. burying scores of minors beneath the fall , of coal, and suffocating others. Some were found, pick in hand, as if about to begin work. The disaster was said to be the worst in the history of Canadian: coal mining.
