MAHENO'S NEW ENGINES
FAST RUN FROM SYDNEY TO AUCKLAND. (By Telegrai>h.-PreM Association.) . Auckland, July 28. The Maheno arrived from Sydney at 11 o'clock on Saturday night, the passage of 1281 miles being accomplished in the smart timo of 3 days 7 hours 68 minutes actual, steaming" time. A strong set in the ocean currents was met with for the first 24 hours. This miiant'.a loss of about 14 miles in a day's run. The Maheno , averaged .16 knots throughout the run, and the distance cf 211 miles from . Cape Maria Van Diemen to Auokland was accomplished at .a"-. ; speed o{ 17 knots. The steamer's new engines were well tested on the run,, and her officers state that the vessel has lost that long rolling motion,-..which was so conspicuous when steaming with her old turbines. The new geared turbines also effected a Baving of 20 per cent, in the Maheno* b coal consumption. . The record between the- two ports is hold' by the Union Company's R.M.S. Niagara, Burning oil fuel, she cut the distance out ;in the exceptional good time 1 of 2 days 23 hours 34 minutes. On that occasion the. liner ,was only using eight out of her. ten boilers, and she experienced moderate to fresh winds and occasional rough seas.
