IMMIGRATION.

The overflow _ of population from the United Kingdom the Dominions has this year shown a heavy shrinkage, and the emigration agents in London aro being hard put to maintain a supply of new blood for their States. As was reported sorao littlo time ago the boy immigrant is now being regarded by some Australian States as the best Gold remaining to bo exploited'j and there can be : no doubt that with proper supervision many British lads can be put in the way of doing far .better for themselves

overseas than they are likely to do by remaining in the Old Country. Now Mb. Percy Hunter, Director of the Joint Immigration Department, maintaincd_ by_ New South Wales and Victoria in London, has come forward with a novel proposal with regard to girl immigrants. He has been endeavouring to increase the number of British domestic servants emigrating to Australia, but finds the cotter class of domestic so scarce that she can practically demand her own terms in England, and has no desire whatever to go overseas. Mr. Hunter's suggestion is that orphan girls should be secured for Australia. It is no use, ho eays, trying to get these girls when they have reached working age, as their guardians have far more situations waiting for them than they can fill. If Australia wants these orphan waifs she will havo to catch tnem young and house them and train, them in Australian institutions. Talk of such expedients as these shows to what an extent the drift of population outward from Europe has shrunk, >and once again indicates the need for activity in immigration work. ' . .
