RUGBY TARANAKI DEFEAT MANAWATU. iJij 'iv.b.'rapii.—t'rujs Association.) New Plymouth, July 23. Tlie Taranaki Hugby representatives mot Manawatu to-day in the presence of about 1500 people. The visiting forwards played a fine game, and the backs defended well. The game was very even until the last fifteen minutes, when Taranaki scored • two tries, converting one. The first spell ended with the score three points each, tho final result being: Taranaki,. 11; Manawatu, ii. Tries were scored for the winners by Robinson,- Bertrand, and Kissick, Stohr converting one, and for the losers by Carroll, 'l'lio Shield was not competed for.

ENGLISHMEN DEFEAT TARANAKI. (Br Tel«gr»pli,—Prw Aiioei&uon.} _ Eltham, July 23. There was a record attendance at tho Leaguo match, England v. Taranaki, to-day. A great game resulted, but the visitors were superior in speed and combination, t and secured an easy victory. Play opened evenly, tho efforts of tho English backs being nullified by tho Taranaki forwards. After five minutes' play Thomas kicked hard into the home territory, and from a scrum for a knock-on Hall secured and scored. Guerin converted. The Taranaki forwards rushed away and England forced. From a scrum the ball was handled by all the English ibaoks, but Tichbon touched down. The Taranaki forwards rushed down the field, but Farman saved. Tho visitors' forwards were hooking tho ball well, and this gave the bjeks a great advantage. Moorhou6e started a loombined movement, - from which' Smith scored. Guerin converted. A minute later Moorhouse centred grandly, and Wagstaffe scored, Guerin converting. Taranaki kept their opponents at bay for some time and good work by King, Parker, and Osborne resulted in Holland kicking the ball oyer the dead-ball line. After play in mid-field, Kyle looked dangerous, but he was. pulled down on the line. Tho ball came from tho blind side of the scrum, and the English backs raced down the field, Moorhouse scoring. Guerln's kick failed. Tocker, King, Ticlibon, and Osborne got away in but were grassed, while great tackling by the Taranaki men effectual-, ly: held the Englishmen. Nicholls, Kyle, Parker,- and'Martis carried the leather down-field, and Nicholls, following up well, took a difficult pass and scored in the corner. Hooker's kick failed. The English backs and then tho forwards rushed away, but were stopped by Martis and Fitzgerald. Tho l backs came again, however, and Moorhouse scored. Guerin failed with the kick. The visiting backs combined well, and from an opening made by Wagstaffe and Moorhouse, Romans scored, but Guerin failed to improve. At half-time the score was; England,. 24; Taranaki, 3.
Taranaki gave a better display in the second half, and held the visitors for some time. The English backs, however, wore very good, and at length MacGarra scored, Gueriri's kick failing. Taranaki, by .grand tackling' and continued dash, held the visitors in their own territory for twenty minutes, during which time Nicholls secured from a scrum and gave to Kyle, who passed to King, tho latter scoring. No goal resulted. Following this, from good back play' Moorhouse scored twice, Guerin converting one and hitting the upright with the other shot. Later Guerin arid Moorhouse scored for ithe visitors. " Scrambling' -play carried' the' ball to the other end, where Hooker scored from a- free-kick.. A minute later locked, Tichbon, Kyle, and Charters mado ground, and King secured and scored again. Hookor failed to convert. Just on> tinio Wagstaffe, Moorhouse, and -Hall got away and gavo the ball to M'Garra, who scored. Guerin failed to convert, and the came ended: England, 43; Taranaki, 11.
GOAL-KICKING COMPETITION. (B.v Telasrank.—Press Aasoelatlon.) Eltham, July 23. A goal-kicking contest was held, and was won by Guprin, who .-was presented by Mr. Clifford with a medal, provided by the Taranaki League.
BOXING THE N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association) Wanganul, July 23. The boxing championships were continued this evening, in the presence of a fair attendance, with the following results Bantam-weights. J. Harrhy (Otago) v. Croskery (Gisborne).—Harrhy won oil points. Feather-weights. J. W. Oliver (Wellington) v. W. J. Watkins (Wanganui).—Oliver won on points. N. Bennetts (Auckland) v. Barr (Wairarapa).—Bennetts won on points, after a slashing encounter. Light-weight, M. James (Auckland) v. E. Stewart (Wellington).—James was leading on points in the third round, when Stewart was disqualified for hitting in a break-away. Vernall (Christclrarch) r. Muss en (Greymouth).—Mussen won oil points after a lively coutcst. Welter-weight. Ha.vill (Auckland) v. Heeney (Gisbonie). —Heeney, who showed himself to be a fire-eater, won on points, after a great' hitting contest. . . Heavy-weight Final. Savory, 13st. 71b. (Auckland), v. Iggulden, 12st. 21b. (Wairarapa).— After putting up a, very game fight for two rounds, "igguldeu injured his right arm and had to retire. - Middle-weights. Manning (Christehurcli) v.
