THE NAVY LEAGUE

The Executive Committee of the local •■ branch of the Navy League .met; last night, Mr. J. B: Harcourt presiding. Among the correspondence dealt -with' was a letter from headquarters, inquiring the views of the branch as'to the defence of the Pacific. A discussion followed, but it was eventually deemed_ in-; advisable to express a- definite opinion, especially in view of the. fact that naval. defence threatened to become a party .nuestion in New Zealand, and, further-:: more, the league members represented such a'small section of tho community;-, The feeling of the' committee was that the league should/ as heretofore, confine itself; strictly, to its policy'of educating public opinion as to the absolute necessity of tho retention of British naval supremacy, and an appreciation of the disaster that the loss of our horiU ago of sea power would mean to each and every part of tho Empire. It was intimated by several other league branches in the Dominion that they would contribute to the cost of the frozen wreath to be sent to London in connection with the 109 th anniversary of TraOn the motion of Mr. C. R. Smith, the name of Caotain R. L. Evatt was; added to the local TrafalgarDcmonstration Sub-committee. . -.•- Various correspondence was submitted, also an elaborate report from Londou as to the work of the league. This report stated that:—"Tho activities of the leaguo during 1913 have been more extensive than at any previous year since the foundation of the. movement. Ther« has been a vast increase .in "its membership among the'working-classes, and widespread interest iu British sea power has been inculcated* in' the'minds of masses of the wage-earners of -the country."
