CONSTABLE STREET TRAM-LINE

EXTENSION NECESSARY... ' The/Mayor (Mr.' J, P. Luke), has'been seized with' the necessity of proceeding at the earliest possible moment with tho extension of tho Street electric tramway line to Kilbirnio. ■ He states that the Tramways Board has (through, its chairman, Mr. W. H. Morton), made representations to'tho effect .the congestion on the. cast-bound cars via the tunnel' is becoming more and more pronounced, and with the approach of summer this congestion is likely to become seriously accentuated. For that reason; it is absolutely necessary that another track through to tho eastern suburbs should be provided, arid the'Constable'Street line must bo extended. A statement from tho City Engineer will be placed before the council at to-morrow night's meeting,- showing the urgency of the firoposed work, which had only been doayed by the shelving of the loan proposals. Tho Mayor is quite emphatic that the work must- bo proceeded with at once; tho assumption is that the Tramways. Board finds that the single track via Pirie'Street and the Mount Victoria tiirinel'will bo inadequate to eerve the 1 growing districts beyond the eastern range of hills.
