LIBERAL CANDIDATE SELECTED. (B.v Teliexapli.—Bpeei?' Correspondenr.. , - Patea, July 20. Messrs. Wilford and M'Donald. M.P.'s, arrived at Patea to-day, and atieuded a conference convened from all parts of the electorate, for the purpose of selecting a candidate to contest the Patea scat in the Liberal interests against the sitting member (Mr. Pearce). At a public meeting held in the Town Hall, Mr. Wilford announced that Mr. Morrison, of Moxwelltown, had been selected as the Liberal candidnte. Messrs. M'Donald and Wilford uddreesed the meeting at length, criticising the Government polioy, particularly with regard to the "local navy," finance, and public works. Mr. Wilford declared that tho Minister had authorised commissions over and above salary being paid, to-officers of the State Insurance Department, thus usurpiiig the functions.of the Public Service Commissioners. He also claimed that if the Reform Party were returned to power they must have a local navy. At the conclusion of. the 'meeting a vote of thanks and confidence in the Liberal Party was declared carried, . amid a storm of "Noes!" The meeting ended ■ with cheers for • Sir Joseph Ward and Mr. Massey.
