The :game of the afternoon was the contest between United and Metropolitan. United proved them-, selves the better team, and secured deserved victory. ;UNITED.METROPOLITAN. Play in the United-Metropolitan game, ■was fast, keen, and exciting. Both elevens played te win, and throughout the length of the contest the ball was transferred with lightning-like, rapidity to either end of the field. Metropolitan were very prominent in the early stages of the game, and shortly after commencing it was only M'Eldowney who stemmed • a very dangerous rush from them. In a; thrice United were travelling with all speed to the other end'of the field, they were through the backs, but Boyd had too much pace on to make sure. .When Metropolitan had scored some time later, however, per medium of Camill, the teams galvanised .into greater action.. .United were soon to the fore with a dangerous rush, whioh was stemmed by a breach of rules on the part of their opponents. Boyd goajed from the penalty bully, and the scores were even. The .opening of the second spell saw another ] goal scored for United. Boyd, who throughout played a brilliant game, was responsible. Thon'Metropolitan emulated one of their opponents' lightning like rushes. Shceran had the scoring look in his eyes.,' The goalkeeper saw there was trouble, and rushing out from his charge put an end to the danger by administering a terrific kick to the ball.'. Shortly after lioyd was to the' fore for United, and the score was 3—l in favour of United. Before the game closed Metropolitan scored a surprise goal. United, however, more than met this by adding a duo of points to their total. Sheeran with.a particularly fine shot.was responsible for Metropolitan's goal,'and'Lyons and Boyd for United's.' Mr. J. Gendall was referee. . UNIVERSITY-KARORI. Karori must be breaking up when they fell victims to University by no fower a total than 6 goals to nil. On the other hand, the 'Varsity men are rapidly inu proving, and can perhaps be looked upon to' carry off a surprise game ere the season closes. The Stacks, of course, were to the fore throughout the game. George Strack scored three goals and_ Karl Shack two. Hastisk was responsible for the other point. . Mr. Manning was referee INSURANCE-WELLINGTON. - One of the njost uninteresting games of the day resulted from'the meeting between Insurance and Wellington. ■ One would have expected the latter eleven to .put up a better 3kowing ; .thah to' be de-' feated by 4 goals to li£~f.;.v'-W--- ■■• Play -was ragged throughout, and dragged on uninterestingly. For the. winners Jackson (3) and M'Clintock were the-soorers. -Morpeth-scored for-.-Wel-lington. ■.' ! Mr. J. C. Cusack.controlled the game. There was a "slump" in the girls' . games on Saturday. The only senior, match played at Karori ■ was between Ramblers A and College. Old Girls.. It was an uninteresting and rather lifeless affair, in. whioh .the. former team scored a runaway victory by 6 goals to nil. .Misses Pickering (3), Edwards (2), and Simon were the. scorers, Mr. J. W. Gendall was the referee. The other game set down for play, Ramblers B v; Syrens, had to be abandoned on account of the latter's defaulting. Junior.-University drew with Ramblers score. There was no score in the Technical School-Girls' College game. AUCKLAND DEFEAT WAIRARAPA. .By Tolesra,»h.—Frees Aasociatien.l Auckland, July 19. ■ Auckland defeated Wairar.apa in the Challenge Shield match by 6 goals to 1. The visitors wero outclassed in the second spell. Auckland's first' goal was secured by Mahoney, and there was no increase beforo half-time. Shortly after the. resumption of the game Fisher scored for Wairarapa, and equalised the scores. From there on the Auckland players had matters all their own way, and goals wore scored by Whittaker (3), Johns, and Mahoney.
