TOWN PLANNING

LECTURE BY MR. C.C. READE.' At the Newtown Library last night Mr. C. C. Readc, of the Town Planning Association, delivered a lecture on "Garden Cities Versus New Zealand Slums and Suburbs." : Sir Robert 1 Stout presided. Mr. Rcade used lantern views to'contrast Tui Street and other_ Wellington localities with some beautiful narrow streets in English garden towns, and ho showed some pictures of disgracefulAuckland slums, and Auckland suburbau roads, which did not compare favourably with pictures screened as oxamrJes of what might have been. Mr. Reade said that it was not always necessary to have sixty-six feet roads fas was the rule in New Zealand). In many residential areas-Toads could be narrow, and the , necessary space,-be-tween dwellings could be secured by setting the houses back from the frontages. This gave the additional advantage of leaving room for gardens—a space which we in New Zealand would tako for a road which would be quite needlessly broad. Arterial roads, on ' the other hand, should be a pood deal wider than sirty-six feet. The time had arrived when New Zealand should have a Town Planning Act,-and should endeavour to learn something from : the older countries of the ■world. Better living conditions would ensure a healthier and more contented people. (Applause.)
