Smith towered above his opponent, but proved a slow and lumbering hitter. His blows were frequently out of distance Carpentier adopted; different tactics than in his match against Wells, standing off instead of rushing in. He was immeasurably smarter and cleverer in bis. footwork. v ' ■ . The fight. commenced with, a clinch. After breaking away, Smith rushed and swung low with tho left, for which he was cautioned.
