There is 110 improvement to note in the local grain market, which is even quieter now than it has been all through a very quiet season.- Little or no grain, is offering, and apparently there is no inquiry. The potato market is still dull, owing to buyers iu the Auckland market still holding off. The tone,of the market is caoicr,. but few sales arc being made, as, the growers prefer to hold rather than accept lower orices than those lately ruling. The' Main Trunk railway is said to have mado o material difference to the business that
was formerly done by the South Island with Auckland. Supplies of potatoes and chaff are now railed through from .the Wellington province, whereas, before the.railway was opened, tho South-Island did business by sea. The Bast Coast of Wellington is now obtaining supplies of early seed potatoes from Auckland. This means that a larcer area of potatoes has been, grown iu the Auckland province this eea'son, and must havo also had an important hearing upon the northern market, and accounted for tho lessened demand from there, RISE.IN BUTTER.
