/ MAGISTRATE'S. COURT THE GAME OP PAKAPOO. The police business at the -Magistrate's Court yesterday was presided over by.JVIr. I). (J. A. Cooper, S.M. Ah '\Vong pleaded guilty to a charge '.i being the occupier of a common gani-ing-liouse, to wit No. 8 liaining Street, and Joe Ting admitted that ho assisted in tho management of tho same. Mr. It. M. 'Watson, in asking for leniency, .stated that both tho accused were first offenders, and possessed excellent characters. His Worship lined Wong £20, and Ting £10. SHOP-LIFTER CONVICTED. A charge of shop-lifting was proved against William Courtenayj who was sentenced to -seven days' imprisonment for stealing a hat valued at 14s. Gd., tho property of George Fowlds, Ltd., and ordered to pay the value of the hat. THEFT OP LEATHER. Thomas Edward Williams, who was represented by Mr. IT. P. O'Leary, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing irom an express wagon a quantity of leather, at £1 19s. Sd., tho propcrty or Arthur George and another, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentenco when called upon. OTI-lElt CASES. Minnie O'Connor, deemed to bo an incorrigible. rogue, was sentenced to throe months' imprisonment. For insobriety, Violet M'Kinuoii, Evelyn Butler, and Allan M'Kinnon wore each fined 30s. Thomas Donnelly was convicted an 3 discharged and < rdered to pay medical expenses, 17s. 6d. One first offender was convicted and discharged. CIVIL BUSINESS. LIABILITY FOR RATES. An action by the City Council for- the recovery of £6 17s. 4d., rates due on certain property, was heard before Mr. W. 6. hiddell, S.M., yesterday, the defendants being the Kilbirilie Estate Co., Ltd., and Horace Darivers Baker, land agent. Mr. J. O'Sliea appeared for the City Corporation; Mr. D. G. Jackson for the defendant Baker: and Mr. E. M. Sladden for the Killjirnie Estate Co. Oh the valuation roll,, it was claimcd by tho plaintiff, the iulbirnio Estate Co. were made responsible for the payment of rates. Tlie company denied liiihility, and alleged that Baker liable, but tile latter also denied liability. The plaintiff corporation was dubious as lo Whom it -was- entitled to recover tho rates from, and consequently the company and Baker had been joined as defendants. As Baker's name was not on the valuation roll as responsible for the rates of the' property, his Worship entered a nonsuit in respcct of plaintiff's claim against- defendant Baker. For-the defendant company, Mr Sladden raised the question of title, and contended that tlie Magistrate had 110 jurisdiction,on the case. After hearing evidence, liis Worship said that it was clear that tlie defendant company was interested in tho prcperty. Judgment would be for the plaintiff for the amount claimed, and cost:! £2 4s. DISPUTE OVER COMMISSION. A claim amounting, to,a' settlement-of accounts oil dissolution' of partnership was heard by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., yesterday, when Frank C. Matthews, .agent, Low-er Hutt, sued Fleming Laur-. $teop','..juit, draper "and outfitter^. AV6I-, lington, for the sum of £42 Bs. 9d., being commission duo to tho plaintiff on the. sale of shares. After hearing legal argument, ' , his Worship reserved decision. Mr. M. Myers appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. A. -W. Blair for the defendant. KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR-'-•CYCLE. Before Mr. D. G. ,A. Cooper, S.M., Clara E. llae, wifo of Geo. L. Rae, of Adelaide. Road, sued .Chas. Francis Swain, engineer, for £15 damages. Tho statement of claim sot forth that on October 27 tho plaintiff, whilst crossing a road in Newtown, .was knocked down by tho defendant, who was .'riding a motor-cycle. The plaintiff alleged negligence on the part of the defendant. Tho defence was a general allegation of contributory negligence. ■ His Worship, after hearing tlie evidence, gave judgment for the plaintiff for £8, and costs amounting to £2 os. CLAIM FOll MONEY LENT. James Allen, tailor, Pet-one, sued his brother Alexander Allen, clerk, for the sum of £10.- Plaintiff alleged that this sum- was forwarded by him from New Zealand to his brother in Scotland as the means wherewith lie could como out to tho Dominion. Defendant, ho had not repaid tho money Tho Magistrate (Mi W. G. Riddell, S.M.) gavo judgment for the plaintiff for the amount claimed. As ifc was a family matter, ho would not allow witnesses'# expenses. • -. A LOST BOAT. Reserved judgment was given by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. , in the case in which Philip Barrett, seafarer, sued Basio L. Donne and Guy Hoggard for tho sum of £24, being tlie vaiue of ;i boat owned by the plaintiff, and alleged to liavo been lost'-through negligence on tlie part of the defendants. After revicwin" the facts of the case (published in Friday's issue'of The Dominion); his Worship gave judgment for the plaintiff for £20, witli costs. DEFAULTING DEBTORS.
