INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION

NEW ZEALAND-MADE GOODS. Mr. Tlios. Ballingor presided at a meeting of tlio Wellington Provincial Industrial Association held in tho association's liall last ovoning. The association decided to contribute £2 2s. .towards the expenses of Messrs. Davidgo and lteado in connection with their town-planning lectures Mr. G. R. Whiting, secretary of/the Federated Boot Trade' Union, wroto'asking the association to convene a. confcrence to consider the inattor of instituting a Dominion, stamp or brand for goods manufactured .within tho Dominion. , ■ The chairman thought that was a matter for tlio Industrial Federation. Mr. 13. Bull drew attention to tho fact that last year 28,000 boxes of Burnish candles had been imported into New Zealand. The merchants had paict 4jd. duty- per box less , per cent., and the stock had been sold by them for 4ijd. net—they were working 011 a 2i per cent, profit. For that reason the sale of locally-mado candles had dwindled to almost nothing, and thero were plants lying idle. The Burmah candles were not being imported into Australia, where, ho understood, they were kept out by an extra $d. per lb.'duty. Mr. Ballingor thought it would be a very good thing, if they could induce tho working man to purchase New Zea-land-made goods. , A letter was received from tho Minister of Customs (the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher) to the effect that the Customs Law Amendment Bill was under consideration. It had not been definitely decided as to whether 'it would bo gone into this session. Since that Mr. Allen 'stated that he had heard that , the Bill would nofc. be considered this session.. A suggestion was made that 1 a deputation might wait on the Minister, and submit particulars of the conditions of specific industries, say the candle and the printing industries. •Mr. Watkins said that the duty on' printed matter (3d. per lb.), .was not. sufficient to protect the trade. In a pound weight of printing there might be 1000 or 2000 labels, and an impost of 3d. amounted to nothing. Finally it' was decided to ,write to the Minister giving particular's of the disabilities under whioh the two industries named were labouring, and suggesting that something might bo done t<j relievo tlie same this year. . , A reply is to be forwarded to Mr. Whiting stating that tho matter of the conference suggested bv him would be forwarded oh to the Industrial Corporation. Mr. Allen (secretary) reported that the following firms had decided to exhibit at tho Panama Exposition:— Messrs."Nathan'and Co. (Glaxo); and Nelson, Moato and Co. (tea); probable exhibitors, Dimock and Co. (tinned meats), Wellington Meat Export Co. (tinned meats' and wool), Gear Meat Co. (tinned meats), and the Caledonian Soap Co. •■' On the motion of Mr. Ballinger it was decided to congratulate tho Auckland Exhibition' Committee on the success of the recent exhibition/ It was also decided to congratulate tho City Council on the acquisition of the aquarium that, was such a feature of . the Auckland Exhibition.
