The warrant officers leaving for Homo are: Messrs. Cain, Sandford, and Leo (Pyramus), and. Messrs. Montgomery and Turner (Philomel).- !' To-day tho "P" Class cruiser Philomel is to ■ be taken ovor by the New Zetlland 'Government, to whom she- has been loaned by the British Admiralty, to be used as a training-ship in connection with tho contemplated establishment in these waters of a locallyowned and .manned arm of tho Navy. Thero will be 110 ceremony in connection with the-,event, fraught as it may bo with importance to the , Dominion. Commander" Ballard will come ashore, and Captain Hall-Thompson (the Government's new Naval Adviser) will go 011 board, hoist liis pennant, and then formally report that ho has done so to the Minister of Defence. . From to-day tho Philomel will be maimed with British Naval officers (who will receivo Navy rate? of pay), and a training (or skeleton), crow of Imporial Navy men. These men will be paid tho colonial rate of ji'ay, and their dntv will consist of training New Zealand recruits to the Navy. To show what this difference in pay' is we quote the rates' :— Plus B. Navy. N.%. Pay. Boys 6d. &7d. Is. day. Ordinary sea- , men Is. 3d. 2s. day. Able Seamen ■ Is. Bd. 3s. day. Stokers' Is. Bd. it 2s. Id. . 3s. day. The extra pay granted by the Now Zealand Government (under tlio old regulations) was placed in the Savings Bank to the credit of tho men, and 'could only bo withdrawn at tho ond of the live-year, term of service.' Captain Hall-Thompson is at present engaged in drafting out the now regulations respecting recruits for the Philomel.,
