Tho Court of Inquiry into the stranding of tho barqito Joseph Craig found that tho master acted unwisely in attempting to cuter the port ~at night under Uio weather conditions existing, but did not feel justified in holding that this amounted to suoit wrongful default as would cntitlo tho Court to deal with his certificate- under Section 239. Tho cvidenco went to show that tho stranding was duo entirely to a sudden rain squall, which caused tho vessel to suddenly gripo to windward and obscured tho harbour lights in tho channel. Tho master's ccrlificato was returned. ECHO OF THE KAIMATA TRACEDY. New Plymouth, July 7. Mr. Justico Stringer delivered" judgment in tho enso in which tho widow of Francis Smith, a victim of the Kaimata tragedy, sued his employers, tho New Zealand Express Company, for compensation for his death when engaged on behalf of tho company. Tho Judgo held that death was not directly duo to any special risk arising from tho naturo of his employment, and gave judgment for defendant with costs. INVERfeARCILL COMPETITIONS. In response to a. telegram from" Captain Fleming, suggesting a. donation of £3 each to two men from tho scow Pahiki, which sank at Auckland, tho secretary of tho New Zealand Shipwreck Belief Society, under instructions, telegraphed his assent to draw on tho society for tho sum suggested for tho assistance of tho sailors, who had lost all their clothes. " tTHEFTS FROM CAS METERS. Walhi, July 7. At tho Magistrate's Court to-day, a youth named Walter Quintal pleaded guilty to thirteen charges of theft from' gas motors, totalling £3 7s. Gd., and of £20 from Mrs. Mitchell's boardinghouse. For tho meter thefts Quint.nl was ordered to bo imprisoned for seven days, and for tho boardinghouso theft to three months' imprisonment. Tho Magistrato said ho would mako representations to tho authorities to havo Quintal removed from tho gaol to an industrial homo.
