HOCKEY ALL G AMI« POSTPONED. All hockey games wore postponed on Saturday afternoon as the result of an intimation received from tho Karori Park overseer to tho effect that if tho grounds were used they would probably bo ruined for the remainder of tho season. This condition was no doubt consequent on the uprooting and searing that the grounds have been subjected to already this season, and tho heavy rains overnight on Friday. SHIELD CONTEST. Tho'first shield match of tho season was played here yesterday, Waikato, tho holders of the Nordon Cup, being tho challenging association. The ground at licmuera was rough, and not suitable for good hockey. A fast and exciting game, in which Hashes of brilliant hockey were frequently seen resulted in a win for Auckland by four goals to two. The gamo opened with an exchange of long hits, and this was followed by a Waikato attack. Hunter scored for tho visiting team. In tho second spell tho holders increased their score, Wliittaker placing tho ball in the net. Tho advantago was reduced shortly afterwards by Hunter, who again scored for Waikato. Tho challengers continued to attack hotly, but tho defence of the local men was equal to the occasion, and play was removed to less dangerous territory. At Miramax Junction on Saturday afternoon a baseball practice match was hold, but owing to tho inclement weather a number of nlayers faile.d to turn out. Scratch teams representing city and suburbs played, nnd the- rjnmo resulted in a win for tlio suburbanites by IS runs to 2. Among tho spectators wero schoolmasters from the Marist Brothers' School.

Saturday's run of tho abo\o club was held from Russell ,Tea Rooms, Karori, 27 members taking part. Tho courso was trailed by Messrs. Mio and Ilarliu. Tho trail led from tho to rooms down into Creswick towards Wilton's Bush, then to Northlands, through mcautiful Karori, and back to tho starting point via tho road. Two packs wero sent out, tho fast pack conceding 15 minutes start to tho slow pack. Tho handicap, howevor, proved too great for tho fast pack never sighted tho B team at nil. Tlio usual run in was held, and resulted: G. Hutton. 1; and J. Douglas, 2 (fast pack); while J. O'Neill was first to finish out of the slow pack. A match 1 was 'played On Saturday afternoon between teams of tho .Tohnsonvilie and tho Waiwotu Golf Clubs, eight a-side, with tho result that tho Waiwetn Club won by sis games to two, Tho individual results wero as follow, giving tho names of tho Johnsonvillo playera first, viz,:—Adams lost to Holmwood, Kent won from Dawson, Mooro lost to Jackson, Buddlo won from Gibbons, Graves lost to Simpson, Mills lost to Glennio, Wallis lost to Pringle, Porter lost to Judd. MIRAMAR CLUB. Tlio Miramar Golf Club's in heed foursomes wero played on Saturday afternoon, under most favourable conditions —a very largo entry, porfect weather, and tho courso in good order.
